Sumie García es una artista visual y cineasta cuyo trabajo se centra en la fotografía intervenida con hilos metálicos, pliegues y materiales como latón y piedra. Su exploración del paisaje y el territorio reflexiona sobre la configuración de identidades y narrativas de nuestro entorno, abordando su importancia en contextos políticos, sociales y culturales. García profundiza en la interacción entre lugar y pertenencia, con la memoria, la historia y la fluidez del cambio como temas centrales. Navega por la representación de la realidad incorporando elementos de ruptura y accidente dentro de la imagen. En particular, su trabajo más reciente entrelaza sus roles como artista visual y cineasta, mostrando un enfoque multifacético de su expresión artística.
Sus piezas han sido incluidas en la Colección de Fundación I.C.A. y formó parte de la muestra retrospectiva de la colección en el Museo Dolores Olmedo. Su obra también ha sido expuesta en espacios como el Museo Franz Mayer (México), Acacia Gallery (La Habana), Spazio Ridotto (Venecia), Salón ACME (CDMX) y una exposición individual en Cromwell Place (Londres) con ammann//gallery. .
En cine, su trabajo se centra en la no ficción con un corte experimental y ha formado parte de selecciones oficiales en festivales como Visions du Réel, FIC Valdivia, Ann Arbor, HotDocs, FIC Morelia, Hiroshima International Film Festival entre otros y se ha proyectado en salas como el Lincoln Center de Nueva York y el Lewis Center of the Arts de la Universidad de Princeton. Su documental Relato Familiar fue ganador de Mejor Cortometraje Documental en FIC Morelia, Shorts México, Festival de Canberra y ganó el Premio del Jurado en Black Maria Film Festival (EE.UU.). Fue nominada al Premio de la Academia de Cine Mexicano (Ariel) en 2018. Su ópera prima Yūrei (fantasmas) tuvo su estreno en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia 2023 y fue ganador del premio TV UNAM durante FICUNAM 2o24. Su nuevo proyecto multidisciplinario, Mapas para después de la verdad, contará con una exposición, un largometraje documental y una publicación.
El trabajo de producción de García incluye puestos en películas como Eco de la Montaña de Nicolás Echevarría (Berlinale 2015), Resurección de Eugenio Polgovsky (Cinema Du Réel 2016) y Red Privada (Netflix). Es productora de Los ojos del mar de José Álvarez (Visions du Réel 2017) y fue productora asociada de Kwaku Ananse de la artista Akosua Adoma Owusu (Berlinale 2013).
Ingresó al Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte (SNCA, FONCA) de México en 2022 y fue receptora de la beca Jóvenes Creadores (FONCA) en dos ocasiones.

Bio
Sumie García is a visual artist and filmmaker whose work centers on photography intervened with metallic threads, folds, and materials such as brass and stone. Her exploration of landscape and territory reflects upon the formation of identities and narratives within our environment, addressing their significance in political, social, and cultural contexts. García delves into the interplay between place and belonging, with memory, history, and the fluidity of change serving as central themes. She navigates the representation of reality by incorporating elements of rupture and accident into the image. In particular, her most recent work intertwines her roles as a visual artist and filmmaker, demonstrating a multifaceted approach to her artistic expression.
Her pieces have been included in the I.C.A. Foundation Collection, and she was featured in the collection's retrospective exhibition at the Dolores Olmedo Museum. Her work has also been exhibited in venues such as the Franz Mayer Museum (Mexico), Acacia Gallery (Havana), Spazio Ridotto (Venice), Salón ACME (Mexico City), and in a solo exhibition at Cromwell Place (London) with ammann//gallery.
In film, her work focuses on non-fiction with an experimental bent; it has been part of official selections at festivals such as Visions du Réel, FIC Valdivia, Ann Arbor, HotDocs, and FIC Morelia, among others, and has screened at venues such as Lincoln Center in New York and the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University. Her documentary Relato Familiar won Best Documentary Short Film at FIC Morelia, Shorts México, and the Canberra Festival, and received the Jury Prize at the Black Maria Film Festival (USA). She was nominated for a Mexican Academy Film Award (Ariel) in 2018. Her debut feature film, Yūrei (fantasmas), premiered at the 2023 Morelia International Film Festival and won the TV UNAM Award at FICUNAM 2024. Her new multidisciplinary project, Mapas para después de la verdad (Maps for After the Truth), will feature an exhibition, a feature-length documentary currently in post-production, and a publication.
García’s production work includes credits on films such as Nicolás Echevarría’s Eco de la Montaña (Berlinale 2015), Eugenio Polgovsky’s Resurrección (Cinéma du Réel 2016), and Red Privada (Netflix). She served as producer for José Álvarez’s Los ojos del mar (Visions du Réel 2017) and as associate producer for artist Akosua Adoma Owusu’s Kwaku Ananse (Berlinale 2013).
She was inducted into Mexico’s National System of Art Creators (SNCA/FONCA) in 2022 and was a two-time recipient of the Jóvenes Creadores (Young Creators) grant from FONCA.
