Navegando entre cartas de navegación medievales, abstracciones del paisaje, verdades coloniales e islotes que surgen del fondo del mar, la artista y cineasta Sumie García nos lanza una provocación: ¿cómo comenzar a buscar una isla que no existe? ¿Cómo representar un territorio fantasma? A través de ejercicios fotográficos con bordados, vídeo e imagen fija, la artista constata una y otra vez que los mapas, si acaso cuentan con alguna certeza, es que no hay tal.

Navigating medieval nautical charts, landscape abstractions, colonial truths, and islets emerging from the ocean floor, artist and filmmaker Sumie García launches a provocation: How does one search an island that doesn’t exist? How is a phantom territory represented? Through photographic exercises with embroidery, video, and still imagery, the artist repeatedly demonstrates that if maps hold any certainty, it is that there is none.
